NGC 6960
Western Veil Nebula (NGC 6960)
The Veil Nebula, situated in the constellation Cygnus, is a striking cloud of heated, ionized gas and dust. It forms part of the Cygnus Loop, a supernova remnant distinguished by various segments that have been individually named and catalogued. The nebula originated from a supernova explosion of a star twenty times the mass of the Sun, which occurred between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago. This explosion would have been visible in daylight, shining brighter than Venus. Over millennia, the remnants have expanded to span about 3 degrees of the sky, equivalent to six times the diameter and 36 times the area of the full Moon. While earlier estimates of its distance varied from 1,200 to 5,800 light-years, recent astrometric measurements place it at approximately 2,400 light-years away. These distance estimates are crucial as they impact the perceived size and age of the nebula.
